How to spot a fake Funko Pop
Counterfeit Pops mostly target popular exclusives and rarer figures. No single check proves a Pop is genuine, but a few minutes with the checks below will catch most fakes.
Start with Funko's own protection: Octane5 stickers
Since New York Comic Con 2024, Funko has used Octane5 authentication stickers on event and retailer exclusives. Funko says they use micro-optic technology (from Crane Currency, the same kind used on banknotes) and carry a unique item code. To verify one, scan its QR code and enter the item's code. Funko notes the older holographic stickers were much easier to copy. Funko's Limited Edition products also come with authentication stickers.
9 checks before you buy
- Compare with official photos. Pull up the Pop on funko.com or a trusted retailer and compare the box art, colours and figure side by side.
- Box print quality. Blurry or pixelated artwork, uneven window borders, a misplaced or fuzzy Funko logo, and wrong or misaligned fonts are common giveaways.
- Licensing marks. The back of the box should show Funko's logo and the licensor's (for example Disney or Marvel), with clean legal text.
- Codes on the figure and box. Genuine Pops usually have a production code stamped under the foot or head, with a matching code on the box. A missing code is a warning sign. (Code formats vary, so focus on whether the two match rather than on the exact format.)
- Paint and moulding. Look for paint bleeding over edges, smudged eyes, glue marks, rough seams, or a head that's the wrong shape or size. A fake can also feel unusually light.
- Stickers. Wrong size, wrong logo, poor printing, peeling or bubbling, or an exclusive sticker on a Pop that was never released as that exclusive.
- Barcodes aren't proof. Counterfeiters copy real UPC barcodes, so a barcode that scans correctly does not mean the Pop is genuine.
- Price that's too good to be true. A rare exclusive listed far below what other sellers are asking deserves a closer look.
- Seller red flags. Stock photos only, no photos of the actual box and foot, or an item shipping from somewhere different from the seller's stated location. (“Made in China” on its own is normal — genuine Pops are made there too.)
When you're buying online
Ask the seller for photos of the actual item: box front and back, the sticker up close, and the bottom of the box and the figure's foot. A genuine seller is usually happy to send them. Buy through platforms with buyer protection, and keep the listing and messages until the Pop arrives and checks out.
Keep your own records
Noting where and when you bought each Pop (and from whom) makes it much easier to deal with a problem later. PopArchive records store, date, factory code and comments for every Pop in your collection, and you can look up current eBay listings for any Pop for free to see what sellers are asking.
Common questions
How can you tell if a Funko Pop is fake?
Compare it with Funko's official photos, check the box print, logos and fonts, match the code on the figure's foot or head with the code on the box, inspect the paint, and be wary of prices far below other listings. Use several checks together.
Does scanning the barcode prove a Funko Pop is real?
No. Counterfeiters copy real UPC barcodes, so a barcode that scans correctly doesn't prove the Pop is genuine.
How do I verify a Funko exclusive sticker?
Exclusives from NYCC 2024 onward use Octane5 authentication stickers: scan the QR code and enter the item's unique code. Older holographic stickers are easier to fake, so compare them carefully with known genuine examples.
Are Funko Pops made in China fake?
Not necessarily. Genuine Funko Pops are made in China too. Where an item ships from compared with the seller's stated location, and the seller's history, are better clues.
